Volunteer Training & Commitments

Modeled after the Master Gardeners program, volunteers are trained with comprehensive energy efficiency training and subsequently utilize their knowledge to perform weatherization and retrofits of apartments units, as well as educational outreach for residents. Taught by certified industry professionals, the training program covers building science principles, ways to improve energy efficiency, and water conservation techniques. Training includes three in-class sessions and two hands-on field sessions.

"I learned a great deal from the training provided by ACE and Conway Energy. Most importantly, I learned numerous ways to make my home more energy efficient." Janine Bergin, Arlington, VA

Specifically, volunteer training included learning how to:

  • seal air leaks around doors, windows, and electrical switch plates with foam adhesive and caulk
  • install gaskets behind light switch and electrical outlet plates
  • install faucet aerators and low-flow shower heads
  • replace traditional incandescent light bulbs with more efficient, long-lasting CFLs
  • install flow restrictors in toilets

In addition to attending the training sessions, volunteers commit to 40 hours of community service, at which point they are certified with master status for energy efficiency education. While contributing to the weatherization and improved efficiency of apartments in their community, volunteers also gained valuable skills that they can apply in their own homes.

"The Energy Efficiency Education program was a great introduction to the energy efficiency, building science, and weatherization fields. Implementing projects in the local community was a rewarding way to utilize the knowledge and skills we gained in the training sessions." Chris Wagner, Washington D.C.

"Even though I live in Sterling, VA, I became a volunteer for the Arlington-based EEE program because I could improve energy efficiency and also people's lives by decreasing their energy bills. I feel lucky to have contributed toward a more sustainable Arlington community and to have worked with many visionary people." Natalie Hisdahl, Sterling, VA
